Cyclades islands are a must-visit summer destination and as most Greeks, I have also visited most of them. Some of them, twice. Recently and for the first time I spent a weekend in the small island of Kythnos and a few days ago I wrote about my stay there, in Guardiero Hotel.
It was fantastic, the island was a revelation. I tried to see as much as I could during my two days stay there and although the time was limited, it was enough to love the place. Either way, I believe Kythnos is an ideal destination for a weekend. It is really close to Athens and so small, to tour around it in a couple of days.
Even now that the weather in Greece is in an “Autumn mood” and swimming is only a summer memory, another visit there feels like a great opportunity for rest and relaxation.
Through my icons today, I hope I can give you a few ideas on things to do if you choose Kythnos for a small weekend getaway. And if you don`t have the time to do it this year, put it on your schedule for next summer, you will have a great time.
Where To Swim.
- The beaches in Kythnos are simply beautiful. Little creeks, clean crystal waters and trumpeters offer some shadow, necessary under the hot summer sun. But if you have to choose one, the most impressive beach of the island is Kolones beach. A big lane of sand divides the sea and gives you the feeling that you are simultaneously on two different beaches. The great scenery completes the view of the monastery at the top of the mountain and the cute boats on the sea. If you have kids, they will love it!!
Where To Eat.
A pleasant surprise, literally in the middle of nowhere, was the tavern Kolona, above the beach. A beautiful modern place, with amazing view and local mezes. Remember to try “sfouggato”, which is a starter dish of little cheese balls made from local goat cheese and it is a bit spicy. If you decide to eat there after swimming on the beach, you can try delicious tastes of sea food or meat, depending on the mood, sweets and cool cocktails till late in the evening.
Where Τo Walk.
The small port of Kythnos, Merixas, is ideal for an evening walk. It is full of little cafes on the beach and little souvenir shops. You can also find great ceramics that are a bit famous. In Anemos cafe, you can enjoy the most delicious sweets and ice creams of the island. It is true, I have tasted them! Again and again! I think I even got a few for home!
Where To… At Night.
The village of Messaria, locally known as Chora, is so small and it will not take you much time to go all around it. It is such a cute village and you will love it`s calm energy and beauty. It is full of little shops and cafe bars. Besides food and drink it offers nice night walks around its side streets, filled with beautiful yards, churches and the small folklore museum.
Where To Stay.
Although the streets of the island are a bit steep and at night transportation may seem a little difficult, I would choose again to stay at Guardiero for its magical landscape, the fantastic breakfast with local ingredients and the immediate sea access.
Till next time…
Enjoy a happy Fall!! 🙂
